So a North Korean, a Canadian, and a Frenchman walk into a bar…

I for one am already starting to miss the seemingly endless onslaught of warmongering shenanigans coming out of North Korea’s barely post-pubescent leader and his crack team of 60-year old generals wielding, nay, BRANDISHING MOST VIGOROUSLY technology that looks like it came straight out of the mid-1990′s.

Housing Market No Longer Your Enemy

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is attempting to throw another prophylactic over the already shrink-wrapped big-swinging mortgage industry (yes, that was a dick joke).

Bungee jumping off the fiscal cliff gives me one hell of a rush

In my last exciting installment of newsletter angst I said that congress would come to a half-assed conclusion to the fiscal cliff crisis just before we went over it so that they could all look like they really cared about their political party’s respective platforms while still stopping our communal death-dive.

Thomas Jefferson on Liberty

In 2010, it occurred to me that Thomas Jefferson has not been interviewed for some time on the state of things and that, as his comments are invariably insightful, there couldn’t be a better time to seek his advice. Despite the fact that Tom has not been alive since 1826, he was very gracious in granting an interview in late 2010, in which we discussed The Proper Role of Government. Read more »

The view is pretty nice from inside my house of cards

So the Olympics are over.  How about that?  I think we did good.  I dunno.  I sort of tuned out after images of Ryan Lochte flat drunk came out on the internet.  That’s pretty much the highlight of my four year wait.  As long as we beat those crazy Chinese, I’m happy. Read more »

It’s Official: Facebook Is the Department of PreCrime

News has just broken about a freedom activist and former Marine named Brandon Raub, who was arrested (apparently without a warrant or being read his rights) on the evening of August 16th. Details are still coming in, but it appears that his “crime” was posting things that the overseers didn’t like on Facebook. Read more »

Corn. People are eating it. Let’s discuss.

There has been a severe drought hitting the Midwest that has laid waste to a large percentage of the country’s corn crop this year.  The headline I read was “There ain’t been no gol-derned rainclouds up in that there sky for a coon’s age, there ain’t” so I can only assume this is the worst it has been in over 50 years.  Aaaaaaand since we are now required by la to have at least 10% ethanol in our gasoline these days, this drought translates directly into higher prices at the pump. We Live in a Screwy World

Bond prices are within stabbing distance of all-time record lows.  Moreover, since bond prices are intimately tied to mortgage interest rates, they are making rates so low that they are off the chart, chain, hook, grid and wagon.  Records only happen so often.  These are the Michael Phelps’ of bond price lows.
